Orphanage for girls in Mumbai (2016/17)

Amcha Ghar (NGO) is a home dedicated to destitute female children who are susceptible to the vulnerable conditions of living on the street. Bija Organization supported the home financially, making sure the children can go to school and be educated, as well as having their basic needs covered.

Giving street children a home and education will reduce the pressure on the country’s struggle with poverty. At the same time we stop the “evil” spiral of underprivileged people remaining poor.

1.2 By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions

The project secured education for the girls, with a strong focus on learning English, in the Amcha Gahr school. The girls were educated through all the levels until the age of 18.

4.2 By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education

This project gave the girls enough security and education which will empower the girls to get in to higher education and/or find jobs.

In this project Bija Organization arranged a security seminar, for the girls in the orphanage and the other girls in the Amcha Ghar school, teaching the girls basic skills on how to handle threats and assaults. Bija also arranged a course for the staff at Amcha Ghar, teaching them the consequences of corporal punishment, with the aim of protecting the girls from obsolete violent (physically and psychologically) disciplinary actions.

16.2 End abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children

Daycare center in Gaya, Bihar (2015)

This was Bija Organization’s first project. The short term goal was to give the children relief from the harsh life of living on a train station were they were being exploited for trafficking, begging and child work. Many of the children were victims of substance abuse. The children were given care, sanitation, food and rest.

India has 88 million (2019) people living below the poverty line of USD 1.25. When Bija started working in India in 2015, with the street children in Gaya, Bihar, we took some pressure of the community to reduce the number of people living below the poverty line.

1.2 By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions

One of the major task of this daycare center was to provide nutritious food for the children. Ensuring a stronger immune system for the children, enabling them to better withstand the harsh conditions of living on the streets.

2.1 By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round

The children were given extra vitamins and food as well as access to shower, clothing and washing facilities. They also had mattresses to rest on and responsible social workers who gave care as well as advice on substance abuse.

3.5 Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol

These children were controlled by the mob in the area. They were given drugs in order to exploit them for trafficking, begging and child work. Taking the children off the streets, strengthen them by giving food, close, care and sanitation, together with information about substance abuse. We make it a little harder for the mob to control the children.
